That sweet but quirky child of mine...

I've mentioned my youngest child before. Nathan is seven and a half and a unique individual. He is very quirky and says the funniest and sometimes deepest things. His latest "quirk" has to do with his wardrobe. He has decided to only wear red shirts. He hasn't come right out and said, "I will only wear red shirts, mom.", but based on the fact that he has worn a red shirt everyday for more than four days and yelled, "I want to wear a red one!" the other morning when I was getting his clothes, it's been kind of implied. Today I tried to slip a really nice black Nike shirt in on him. I tried to get him to wear this same shirt two days ago, but he stopped that thought dead in its tracks. Today I tried putting a long sleeve gray shirt under it thinking that would distract him (That trick sounds a lot lamer now than it did in my head) hoping he would wear it. He put it on, okay good we are making progress, he's gonna wear it! Nope! He looks down at the shirt after he gets it on, gives me a look like , Really! and informs me yet again that he hates the shirt and will not be wearing it today. UGH! It's brand new and you picked it out yourself! So I say to him, "Nathan, can you tell me what it is about the shirt that you don't like?" To which he tells me, "It makes my stomach look big!" (What can I say, he gets the self criticism trait from his momma!) Oh, Nathan, you have a small tummy and I have a secret to tell you. Black is a magic color and actually makes you look thinner. That's why mommy wears it all the time! Nathan looks up at me, again with a look of, are you crazy woman?, and says,   "It doesn't make you look thinner mommy." "What? So it doesn't make mommy look thinner?", I ask.  "No" , he says with a look of I'm sorry I had to be the one to tell you that, mommy. I pretend to be devastated, and put on a really goofy sad face. Nathan reaches up and starts rubbing my shoulders (because he knows I have bad shoulders), and I told him how good that felt. "I always know just how to make you feel better." he said with the sweetest smile on his face. I think to myself, you are gonna make a perfect man, honey, you just said the rudest thing to a woman and have no idea you even did it!! LOL!
So, as Zach and I sat in the car this morning waiting on the other two to join us for the ride to school , I was not the least bit surprised when Nathan came walking out of the house in his newly changed shirt. You guessed it, it was red. Gotta love those quirks!

About Me

My photo
Newton, Alabama, United States
I am a stay at home mom to three great kids that keep me parenting outside the box. I take one day at time, lean on my Lord, and relish any and all advice that helps me or my kids, or me, or my family, did I say me? Seven years ago I lost my wonderful mother unexpectedly. There have been so many times I have wanted to pick up the phone to call and tell her something funny about the kids or ask her advice. So,this blog is dedicated to her, the dearest mommy in the world! I love you, mom!
